VISION: The LT3 Civic Leadership Academy will offer East Orange Public School students the opportunity to learn, develop, and gain an understanding of the social responsibility of a civic leader, through workshops, field trips and open discussion.
MISSION: The LT3 Civic Leadership Academy is committed to providing opportunities that will foster civic engagement, leadership, responsibility and pride among the youth in the City of East Orange.
- One year program
- Participants must be in grades 10-12
- 18 participants per year – Six (6) students per high school, two (2) students (one male, one female) from the 10th, 11th and 12th grades
- Must have at least a 2.7 GPA
PROGRAM APPLICATION TIMELINE:
April 15, 2015: Applications and permission slips distributed
June 1, 2015: Applications and permission slips due/selection process begins
July 15, 2015: Participants selected
August 20, 2015: Mandatory introduction meeting with Parents/Guardians
PROGRAM WORKSHOP TIMELINE AND DESCRIPTION:
Academy participants will attend a series of workshops that cover key areas of civic engagement and will include guest speakers from the respective areas. The month immediately following a workshop topic, the participants will participate in a field trip and will be required to write a brief report explaining what they’ve learned following each trip.

October - Field Trip: Attend a meeting of a civic organization
November 18, 2015: The Role of Local Government
December - Field Trip: Attend a City Council Meeting/Visit Municipal Court/Attend School Board Meeting
January 20, 2015: The Role of County Government
February - Field Trip: Attend a Freeholder Board Meeting
March 16, 2015: The Role of State Government
April - Field Trip: Visit the State House/Legislature/State House Tour
May 18, 2015: The Role of Federal Government
June - Field Trip: Visit Senator Booker/Menendez or Congressman Payne Local Offices or DC offices, DC Tour
July: Recognition/Awards Ceremony (Parents/Guardians invited)
